Breaking
the tradition
and new birth
are absolutely
marvelous and
rejoicing.
Birth –
How heart-beating
and clean as
a morning dew
in hot summer
day!
Kim, Yon-suk¡¯s
print works
can be integrated
in a movement
of the life-Birth.
From the cocoon
of a butterfly
to the blooming
of a flower,
her works is
likely to breathe
with survival
power.
Her printing
work has kept
going for 3years.
Before print
works, she had
focused on the
oil painting
under the theme
of soul. Her
consistent title
of works were
¡®spiritual
Exercises¡¯,
according to
her word, she
has been trying
to form her
sophistical
world - ¡®Stand
with spirit!¡¯
on the canvas.
But she faced
to the barrier
and turns into
the printing
and the image
of the cocoon
of a butterfly,
and expresses
her emotion
in the ¡®flower
composition¡¯.
She still
stays in the
frame of ¡®Spiritual
Exercises¡¯,
in the same
time, is trying
to breaking
the tradition
and imaging
the awaken new
life. With her
works, we can
easily find
the symbolized
motive in simple
and explicit
contrast of
the colors and
add a point,
dot line, or
a small circle
for accent.
In ¡®Cocoon¡¯,
it shows not
only rejoice
of the birth
but associative
image with the
disorder mixture
of wide color
face, contrast
of the theme,
chaotic stripes,
In other
words, she emphasizing
the theme and
accentuating
of the primary
color, we can
feel warm and
free from restriction
in general.
Otherwise
the latest compositions
of flowers and
germinating
buds express
dreamlike as
they are dancing,
or with
light brown
and yellow mono
color tones.
She tried to
keep well-composed
with fitting
disposition
of motifs. And
the artist starts
her works with
stereoscopic
image but they
are sublimated
in the abstract;
therefore, it
emphasizes wriggling
and moving worms.
Nowadays
Kim, Yon-suk
is frequently
using frottage
technique, that
is, scrub the
paper with oil
stick after
placing the
paper on the
coarse wooden
plate. Then
unexpected pattern
and markings
appear fortunately
such as copying
them of the
plate, and the
artist has tried
to change those
unexpected patterns
and markings
into the formative
arts.
She said
that she could
enhance the
artist spirit
without the
practicing materials
and technique.
Actually
it¡¯s totally
right. The artist
paints her own
image in mind
whether there
is visible objet
or not. Her
prints belong
to nonrepresentationalism
or semi-abstractionism
since they have
no visible objet.
Although it
has a little
concreteness,
such as a cocoon
and a bud, the
artist has been
reading and
expressing the
innocent essence
of the objet.
Through it,
she builds the
harmony with
her art characteristic,
the emotionally
inspired colors.
Kim, Yon-suk
is very enthusiastic
print artist.
Dubuffet said,
¡°There is no
art without
intoxication.
But I mean a
mad intoxication!
Let reason teeter!
Delirium! The
highest degree
of delirium!
Plunged in burning
dementia!¡±
I believe that
she is an bohemian
with dementia,
even if it is
not delirium,
to seek a new
express technique
and her ideal
objet.
However,
her works is
limited to simplicity
of the object,
illiberalness
of technique
and limitation
of thought and
become stereotyped
in general.
This is her
assignment to
break it.
