Artist spends most of their time to find the existence of herself out. Ultimately art is the job to find myself. Therefore Dr. Murphy pointed out that ¡®I, the fixed substance, am inessential and compelled to choose a choice of the changing moment.¡¯ According to this aspect, I am the thing that I think and feel. But this variable choice is not worthless at all. Because most of the artists are trying to find the principle of creation to define themselves.

Kim, Yon-suk  has sought the existence of herself via the prints, is focusing on living phenomena of trifles in these days. These works are based on external expression of subconsciousness accumulated on individual experience and special circumstance.

Although I don¡¯t know that how much exploratory volition for living phenomena affects her practical life, I believe that it is not essential element of the works. Because the choice is a kind of desire. My point is that the artist is fascinated with existence of the surroundings herself and make them express in her own principle and way.

The objects that she has picked are expressed with the concrete items- stones, winds, and women.

This was originated from the cocoon in the 1st individual exhibition. Her practice dwells in the affection for stones and women surrounding her and stays in the memories of the wind in the woods and trees.

The stones of she stand for the Mother Earth and the winds stand for the enlightenment of that ground. In the same sense, crude outlook of women she painted means maternity embracing that ground. A couple of leaves shown among the stones and Ivy rooted on the humble rocks show artist¡¯s compassion for what is living together.

However the stone wall and thatch acclimated to the tempestuous wind and the sky seen through the gate stone, and the view under the sky are reflecting communicative volition of the artist which is trying to interpret the life of islander with them.

Simone Weil said ¡°To love is to love the distance between me and other.¡± And she  affection to the stones, winds, and women is the process to explore the distance her and the objects. The distance between the artist and the object means the distance between the things that she chose and herself, and means to face to absolute ego.

Her relationship establishment via the printing process is entirely subjective, and it may be interpreted as phenomena of life or symbiosis. In the same aspect it might be understood as external expression of the artist that cracked cabbage, wormy leaf, the fluttered wash hang on and a dog watching them.

Kim, Yon-suk¡¯s printing works has two special characteristics as reflection of herself through the communication. First one is her works show the natural lives not as a scenery but as an objet. The house, cabbage, and stone are printed as a still life without a background. And so was the figure. This technique which the background is omitted, is influenced by Korean traditional paintings and illustrations. Therefore her printings, in positive aspect, show emphasized object and become a poem. Expressed one object is the result of trying to expose the nature from a small stone and a leaf; furthermore, the works show the life living and growing with them in the nature.

The other characteristic is related to her printing technique. Used wood plate, her works could be categorized in the woodcut; however, they show some experimental elements as well. Because she was re-coating gesso on the plate  and re-carving several times after primary carving. On the other hand, the pressed paper accentuated prominence of the plate, and expresses the feel of materials well.  It, finally, represents the feel of stones, toughness of the islander women, and energy of the wind.

Kim, Yon-suk has been recognized from the local and printing artists awarded grand-prix in Jeju Grand Art Exhibition, and Excellence award in National Competition of  prints by KCPA. But I want to recognize her for clinging to printing works rarely in local society and her endeavor after experimental art attitude. In addition, the objet of her works is the wonder nature in Jeju and her manner to seek existence of herself through the communication with the objects surrounding her.
